If this post helps you, please share it!

If you’re cleaning your kitchen, chances are you’re also cleaning your range hood. And you’re probably wondering if your range hood filters can be washed in the dishwasher. This would save you a ton of time and energy. But not all range hood filters can be washed in the dishwasher. So, can mesh filters be cleaned in the dishwasher?

Yes. You can clean mesh filters in the dishwasher. Mesh range hood filters are typically made from stainless steel or aluminum, both of which are dishwasher friendly. However, your dishwasher might not get all the gunk out of your filters. We recommend soaking your filters in soapy water to remove grease. You may then use your dishwasher to finish the job.

But there’s a lot more to it than that. So, in this article, you will learn what a mesh filter is, how to identify if you have one, and how to best clean your mesh filter, so your range hood can perform at its best.

Editor’s note: This article was updated on October 7, 2021, to include additional information regarding mesh filters.

What are mesh filters

Mesh filters are kitchen range hood filters that help remove grease and other contaminants from the air in your kitchen. They can be washed and reused when they become dirty, saving you the trouble and expense of purchasing and storing replacement filters.

How can I tell if I have mesh filters?

To identify if you have mesh filters, take a look at the face of the filters. If they have a honeycomb-like pattern, then they are mesh filters. Mesh filters also resemble a net with fine metallic strands holding it together.

Can I clean my mesh filters in the dishwasher?

The short answer is yes. Mesh range hood filters are made from stainless steel or aluminum, which are dishwasher-friendly materials. However, the dishwasher might not get all the gunk and grease out of your filters. So, we always recommend soaking your filters in soapy water to remove grease. You can then use your dishwasher to finish the job.

What is the best way to clean a mesh filter

Keeping your range hood queen is essential for optimal performance. That goes for the filters as well. Excess grease accumulates easily and can be tough to remove. Follow the steps below to clean your mesh filters properly.

1. Turn off the range hood

Make sure your range hood is turned off to avoid damaging the fan or any internal parts while removing the filters from the hood.

2. Remove the filters from the hood

Remove the filters from the range hood with care. Most filters are simple to remove and easily pop out from beneath the hood. This can easily be done by pressing into the latches of your back of filters and tilting the filters at an angle. In most cases, this will remove the filter. Make sure to have two hands on the filters to avoid them dropping onto your stovetop.

3. Fill yor sink with hot water

This is probably a good time to put your waterproof gloves on. Clog up your kitchen sink and fill the sink with hot water. Make sure you fill it with enough water to fully submerge the filter pieces.

4. Submerge the filters

Place your filters in the sink. Make sure it’s fully submerged.

5. Add your cleaning solution

There are many different types of cleaning solutions out there that can decrease your arranged filters. In this example, we’re using a homemade solution. Add the following to the hot water:

  • 1 cup of vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of salt

6. Brush or scrub the filters

Use the toothbrush or non-abrasive scrub and scrub the mesh filter, removing all the excess grease you see. Even if you don’t see grease anymore, keep scrubbing as there may just be a thin layer that is hard to see. Watch out for sharp edges!

7. Run a hot cycle in the dishwasher

Place the filters in the dishwasher and run on a hot cycle. If your dishwasher has one, a pots and pans cycle is ideal.

8. Leave it in the water for an hour

Use a dry towel to pat it down and removing any water that may be visible. You should also leave it out for about an hour to make sure that it’s totally dry.

9. Pop them back in

Now just pop those filters back in the range hood, and you’re good to go.
