What are Baffle FIlters

Stainless steel is the most popular material for baffle filters. It’s the ideal material, providing long life, durability, corrosion resistance, and a shiny finish that makes it visually appealing.

Keep in mind that not all stainless steel is created equal when selecting a stainless steel baffle filter. Corrosion resistance is one of the most important characteristics of any hood filter, and different grades of metal are used.

While there are some visual differences between stainless steel grades, the easiest way to assess stainless steel quality is to perform a magnet test.

What is the Magnet Test and how does it work?

All you need is a regular refrigerator magnet to determine whether a baffle filter is made of lower or higher-quality stainless steel.

Just place the magnet on the steel surface’s front and see if it sticks. If it does, the filter is made of slightly lower-quality stainless steel that is less corrosion resistant. If the magnet does not stick, you know you’re dealing with top-notch stainless steel.

Why is Corrosion resistance Important?

Stainless steel hood filters are constantly bombarded by compounds that contribute to corrosion over time, due to heat, humidity, grease, and particles from the air entering the filter. A hood filter made of higher-quality stainless steel will last longer and require less frequent replacement.

What Can You Do to Prevent Corrosion?

In a commercial kitchen, the most effective way to prevent corrosion is to clean your stainless steel range hood filters on a regular basis. Even if your filters are made of lower-grade steel, proper maintenance will extend the hood’s life. Cleaning filters on a daily or weekly basis, depending on the cooking environment, is also recommended.
