Induction cooktops are a newer type of cooktop that uses electricity rather than heat to cook your food. They’re often faster and easier to use. But you might wonder whether you need a range hood over an induction cooktop.

This article will teach you what a range hood is, what an induction cooktop is, and whether you need a hood over an induction cooktop.

Yes! You should install a range hood over your induction cooktop to remove cooking fats, oils, smoke, and strong odors. However, if kitchen heat is your primary concern, a hood might not be necessary since an induction cooktop generates much less heat than a typical cooktop.

What is a range hood?

A range hood is a kitchen appliance that helps to reduce the number of pollutants in the kitchen. They work by trapping the smoke, fumes, and heat from cook tops and ovens and removing or filtering them from the kitchen.

Range hoods come in various styles and sizes and can be installed as part of a new kitchen or retrofitted to an existing one. They are also relatively easy to operate—just open the hood when you want to start cooking and close it when you’re done.

This is one of the best hoods available at this price point. Reasonably strong CFM for the cost, and it has received rave reviews (over 3,800 reviews!). It looks great, and the LED lights provide a pleasant brightness. For the price, its performance and style are outstanding. Highly recommended!

What is an induction cooktop?

Induction cooktops are a special kind of electric cooktop that uses induction technology to make them powerful and accurate. This means that it gets its power from an electromagnetic field below the glass cooktop surface. The energy is then sent directly to the magnetic cookware, which heats up.

This type of stovetop is becoming increasingly popular because it’s safer and easier to use. Induction cooktops heat up quickly and evenly, making them ideal for busy households. They also have a sleek, modern design that can fit any kitchen.

Induction cooktops are great for environmentally conscious people because they use less energy than traditional stoves. Plus, they’re easy to clean. Just wipe them down with a damp cloth!

What are the different type of induction cooktops?

There are a few different types of induction cooktops out there. Here are the most common.

Freestanding induction cooktop

Standalone induction appliances have the option of being either plug-and-play or hard-wired. A freestanding induction unit may be placed anywhere you choose in your kitchen without the need for custom cabinets or counters. It’s freestanding or fits neatly in between counters and cupboards.

Built-In induction cooktop

These induction appliances are often called “fixed cooktops,” and they are fitted into your countertop or table. While portable models allow for more mobility, built-in models provide the user with more creative freedom in the home or commercial setting. They may be placed anywhere from the main kitchen to the rear kitchen or on a buffet table or countertop.
If you are considering purchasing a built-in device, it is recommended that you first speak with a professional installer to ensure proper installation and wiring.

Portable induction cooktop

These induction stove tops often don’t need any installation and are made to be smaller and more lightweight for portability. Portable induction cooktops and warmers are a terrific alternative for cooks on the move, making award-winning fajitas in a taco truck or preparing a meal in the great outdoors.

Do you need a range hood over an induction cooktop

Yes! To get rid of smoke, fat, oils, and strong odors from cooking, you should always install a range hood over your induction cooktop. Additionally, your kitchen will be cleaner, and the air will be better.

However, since an induction cooktop produces significantly less heat than a conventional cooktop, a hood may not be required if kitchen heat is your main concern.

Reasons to install a range hood over your induction cooktop?

Here are some reasons you’ll want a range hood over your induction cooktop.

1. Remove kitchen oders

Whether or not you require a hood depends entirely on your cooking style. Frying and searing generate a lot of oil and culinary scents, and if you don’t have a hood to catch all those wayward, sticky particles and their lingering odors, they’ll remain in your kitchen. A hood is beneficial if you do a lot of stovetop searing and frying. It will assist in keeping your kitchen clean and significantly eliminate cooking odors.

2. Interior air quality

As previously noted, a good range hood or cooktop hood that exhausts air outdoors is critical for indoor air quality. Not only do hoods remove cooking aromas and grease, but they also remove harmful gases like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. Granted, this is more serious with gas cooking, but it also applies to all cooktop types to a lesser extent because all cooking produces some hazardous emissions.

3. Aesthetics

One of the most convincing reasons to pair your induction cooktop with a hood is aesthetics. A beautiful hood is an eye-catching addition to any kitchen. A beautiful range hood can transform a kitchen.

How do you know which range hood or cooktop hood you need

You can install almost any sort of hood when installing a new one. Contractors can create almost any type of ducting; you just have to be willing to pay for it.

If money is an issue, you’re limited by your existing kitchen layout and/or the cash you’ve set aside for a hood. An under-cabinet mount is generally the most cost-effective option if you have cabinets above your range or cooktop. If your range/cooktop is against an outside wall, you may easily install an under-cabinet or wall mount with outside venting.

What CFM is best for an induction cooktop?

Ideally, a range hood over an induction cooktop would have a capacity of 600 CFM or more. Use 900 CFM or more for stovetops larger than 42 inches. Electric induction ranges eliminate the need for a bulky and expensive vent hood above a gas stove. However, to maintain a healthy and pleasant environment in the kitchen, you’ll need more power across a wider induction range.

The total wattage of an induction cooktop may reach impressive levels. The power of today’s elite stoves may reach 11000 watts and beyond. You could assume that to properly remove the fumes from cooking you need a range hood with a very high CFM rating.

A high CFM rating is preferable, however, induction stoves are still electrical. Even if the wattage is considerable, you won’t have to deal with the dangerous byproducts of a gas stove, like as fumes or extreme heat. However, the CFM of a range hood over an induction cooktop should increase proportion to the range’s size. Both gas and electric stoves are affected by this.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do you still have questions? Below are some of the most commonly asked questions about range hoods over induction cooktops.

Is a range hood required for induction cooking?

Some induction range and cooktop dealers will convince you that an induction cooktop does not require a hood. Because induction cooking generates less ambient heat than gas or electric cooking, your kitchen will stay cooler with an induction range or cooktop. Hence, a hood is less necessary for eliminating cooking heat.

Do you need to buy the same brand of hood as your range?

The most critical features of a hood are that it fits your cooktop and has a powerful motor to remove heat, grease, and odors. You may be able to save money by purchasing an appliance package that includes a range hood, but you certainly don’t need to buy the same brand. In fact, most range manufactures don’t make their own range hoods.

What CFM do you need for an induction cooktop?

For induction cooktops, aim for 600 CFM. To get the CFM, multiply the total BTUs of your cooktop by the BTUs of each burner. So, if your range produces 60,000 BTUs, your range hood must be at least 600 CFM. The more heat your range generates, the more CFM your kitchen range hood requires.

Can you start a fire with an induction stovetop?

An induction stove top is inherently fire-safe, unlike gas or electric ranges. The copper coil underneath the cooktop is what really does the heating for you, so the surface is safe to touch even when your pan is sizzling.

Is it possible to be burned when using an induction stove?

An induction cooktop is far more comfortable to work on than a traditional electric stove. Since of this, it is a good choice for use in the kitchen because it is both secure and simple to clean.

Conclusion

As you can see, a range hood can provide aesthetic value to a kitchen and improve your cooking. Besides this, there are many benefits of using a good range hood too!

It will protect you from the harmful fumes and toxins from the food you’re cooking! Thus, no need to worry about whether or not to install one if you have an induction cooktop already at home. Installing one does not take up much time or cost, so don’t be afraid of giving it a try!

  1. Hello Roger,
My name is Steve and will be updating my kitchen soon and am looking for a range hood that will meet the requirements. Based on Room volume, required air exchanges (15) CFM’s, and BTU’s it complicated because if I use the correct formula I will need a massive range hood, much bigger than the one I am replacing. I am wondering if it based on the size of my kitchen because my kitchen is open to the nook. Once I remodel my kitchen and remove the wall separating the nook/kitchen, it will become a great room. So, do I still calculate based on my kitchen volume from before or now include the 3 rooms that are now one?

    • Hi Steve. When selecting a range hood for an open-concept kitchen like yours, you should indeed consider the volume of the entire space, including the nook and any additional connected spaces. The goal is to ensure proper ventilation and air circulation in the area where you’ll be cooking.

Choose a range hood that meets or slightly exceeds that value. It’s better to have a bit of extra power than not enough. Keep in mind that the range hood should also be at least as wide as your cooktop, and if you have a gas range, you may need to factor in the BTU output as well. A general rule of thumb is to add 1 CFM for every 100 BTUs of your gas range.

Lastly, remember that ductwork, turns, and length can impact the efficiency of your range hood, so you may want to consult a professional to ensure your ventilation system is set up properly.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your kitchen update!
